College is a time for exploring a lot of new things, especially when it comes to food choices. But it comes as no surprise that college is expensive, and most students are working at least one part-time job to support themselves. So with limited time and money, what are some of the best ways to eat while on a college budget?

Have A Plan

Before you head to the store, plan out your meals for the week ahead. Once you have a menu, you can take inventory of the ingredients you already have and make a list of everything you will need as to avoid over buying. Also, check for coupons online or download the app of your favorite grocery store.

Never Go Shopping On An Empty Stomach

No matter how detailed your list is, if you go to the store hungry you will end up buying more than you need. Make sure to have a meal or well-balanced snack before heading out. 

Compare & Contrast
Locate the “unit price” on the shelf directly below the product. Use it compare brands and different sizes of the same brand to determine which one is more economical.

Buy In Bulk

It is almost always cheaper to buy foods in bulk. Smart choices are family packs of meats and frozen vegetables which can be kept in the freezer until needed.

Cook At Home

Preparing your meals at home allows you to stretch your dollar by using similar ingredients or preparing certain foods in bulk such as your proteins or grains

Prepare In Bulk

Use free time to prepare double batches of your favorite recipes. Freeze in individual containers to use on your busy days.

Try Meatless Mondays

Or any day for that matter. By substituting meat in your meals with beans or other pant-based proteins you can save a few extra bucks and experiment with new, easy recipes.

Make Eating Out Count


You can save money by getting the early bird special, going out for lunch instead of dinner, looking for “2 for 1” deals or splitting meals. Make sure to check for deals at places on campus or local restaurants for days they have discounts!
