Self-Care = Best Care
The
Basic Guide to Engaging in Self-Care for the Everyday FSU Student
- Have you ever felt tired for no apparent reason?
- Have you ever felt that you were constantly on the go?
- Have you ever felt consumed by your daily activities?
- Have you ever felt that you just needed some time for yourself?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, it may be time to show yourself some love by taking care of YOU!
So, what exactly is
self-care? Self-care is any activity that is done deliberately to take
care of ones’ mental, emotional, spiritual, and physical health. Deliberately
taking care of one’s self is the key to building a good relationship with
yourself.
Although self-care is a simple concept, in theory, it’s something we
very often overlook. Good self-care improves mood and reduces anxiety. Without self-care, we will get burned out and
not perform at our peak. So it pays to take the time to treat yourself.
Here are some tips on
how to care for one’s self:
Tip #1: Listen to Your Body!
Often our bodies give us
signs that we need to take a break and care of ourselves (i.e., unexplained
tiredness, irritability, headaches, etc.) and often we ignore these signs. Take
time out of your day and/or week and dedicate sometime where you simply just
focus on you.
Tip #2: Treat Yourself!
Go buy some new
clothes/shoes! Go get a mani/pedi! Treat yourself to some ice cream or fro-yo!
Or simply just go for a walk! Go do anything that makes you happy or that you
consider a treat to yourself! You deserve it!
Tip #3: Get Some Sleep!
Let’s face it, as college
students, sometimes it is just hard to get enough sleep. But did you know that
while we are asleep, our bodies are recovering, decompressing, and healing?
When you don’t get enough sleep, not only can that affect your studies, but it
can affect all aspects of your life (i.e., mood, weight, sex drive, etc.).
Tip #4: When all else
fails, seek help.
If you feel that you are drowning
in your daily activities or you don’t even know where to begin with self-care,
seek help. In CHAW, we have Wellness Coaches that can help you set self-care
goals, reduce stress and improve time management. To make an appointment call
