Study Time Tips

Being a student often comes with several assignments due at 11:59pm, 3 exams in one week, and a 5-page paper due in three days that you have yet to start. Or maybe you only have one or two things due for the entire week. Either way, does it ever feel like you can’t focus enough to get any of your work done?

Here are some tips to help you make the most out of your study time.

Give yourself regular breaks. Instead of pushing your brain to work overtime, which makes it harder to retain any information, take a 5-minute or even a 20-minute break to rest your mind.

Get plenty of sleep. At least 8 hours of sleep at night is important for both your mental and physical health. Being well-rested can also make it easier to focus.

Plan your days. Use a calendar or planner to schedule your days. Having your deadlines and events written down in a calendar will organize your weeks and help your minimize assignment pile-ups.

Turn off or put away any distractions. It’s easy to get caught up in an Instagram feed or Twitter timeline, so turn off your phone or log out of the apps so you’re not tempted to take a “quick” social media break.

Take advantage of campus resources. If you’re struggling in your classes, check out the ACE Learning Studio in WJB or the CARE Lab in Thagard for free tutoring on a wide variety of subjects. Also, if you want to do your work in a quiet area, check out the study rooms in Stroz or Dirac.

Make an appointment with a Wellness Coach. CHAW has a Wellness Coaching program that helps students work towards overall well-being and academic performance. They offer one-on-one sessions to discuss your goals and create an action plan. To make an appointment call: 850-644-8871
